Where to learn more

If you get the chance to attend one of Osada Steve's rare master classes outside Japan, jump at the chance. The other option is a pilgrimage to Japan to visit him at Studio Six in Tokyo, which, I guarantee, will be a transformative experience. Steve has spent most of his 30 years in Japan as a professional nawashi and studied with many of the legends of kinbaku, including the late Yukimura Haruki, grand-master of newaza (floor work). He has undoubtedly been my greatest influence both in my tying and my vision of the art.


As the videos demonstrate, an effective session doesn't require a lot of rope or complex ties to have profound effect. The secret is all in how you use the rope and interact with your partner. Whilst we emphasise these aspects in all our tutorials, the best resources are the 'Tying techniques' series and 'Introduction to 1-rope techniques'. As an addendum to these tutorials or to help enhance existng skills, 'Re-discovering shibari' will follow us revising and filling in the gaps with a student who has some experience, learned through study of typical resources and experimentation.
